Fusuma
Fusuma are a wood-framed sliding doors and partitions covered with thick paper.
The fusuma, which occupy a large surface area in a room, are finished with Japanese paper and textiles to decorate the space.
The fusuma paper can become less taut on rainy days and more so on sunny days.
A traditional fusuma groundwork is made of 10 sheets of Japanese paper on one side. This is devised to allow the surface to ‘breathe’ in order to cope with the humidity during sweltering hot summers in Kyoto.
