PROの表具師が技術とともに、京表具の歴史・文化背景・道具や材料についても解説します。

This is a small-group Kyo-hyogu class where you can mount your own artwork such as calligraphy or paintings onto hanging scrolls and folding screens.
A professional hyogushi will teach you the various techniques and also explain the history, cultural background, tools and materials used in Kyo-hyogu.

Creating a hanging scroll of standard-size Japanese writing paper calligraphic work.

Cost : 3,500 yen × 10 sessions (3 hours per session)
Material costs are separate. (About 4,000 yen)

Contents : e.g. Hanging scroll

1. Calligraphic work Hadaurauchi
   A preliminary task called “Urauchi (backing)”. Its purpose is to correct the shrinkage of Japanese paper.
2. Design, plan and Choosing the cloth (kireji)
   Selecting a suitable cloth which best complements the honshi (calligraphic works).
   Consideration of the balance of colors / patterns and the overall harmony with the honshi and its features.
3. Backing the cloth with Japanese paper (kireji hadaura)
   After cutting the cloth and adjusting the patterns, water is applied to compensate for shrinkage to the cloth.
   A paste is spread evenly on the lining paper and then affixed to the cloth and secured in position by repeated brushstrokes.
4. Lining of the cloth with Japanese paper (Mashiura)
   The same technique as for hadaurauchi. Mashiurauchi is the secondary backing.
5. Tsukemawashi
   An important step involving consideration of the design and the pattern prior to joining the various sections.
6. Mimiori・Souurakamigoshirae
   Scoring the paper, cuttting, folded it back, and glueing it. (Mimiori)
   Preparing the paper for the entire lining (Souurauchi).
7. Souurauchi
   The complete lining , it strengthens the mounting and allows it to be rolled up without damaging the hanging scroll.
8. Karibari・Jiku・Hyoumokugoshirae
   Preparing a scroll bar (Jiku) and a semicircular wooden bar (Hyoumoku).
9. Harikaeshi
   Allowing the finished work to dry.
10. Shitate
    Attaching the scroll bar and hanging strings for completion.
